Moving Too Fast Part I: Traditional Thinking

Introduction

Have you ever heard the statement that you are “moving too fast” in some area of your life? My guess is that someone has told you this either concerning a relationship, a career or job change, or perhaps even a hobby. There is an underlying notion in society that you should “stick it out” or give something “more time” but usually without a specific duration associated with it. What is the right amount of time – to stick out a relationship, a job, or even an activity? Is it three months, six months, a year, several years?

I had once heard that time is the only resource that one cannot recover once lost. Everything else can be re-gained if lost, even money. So it is best to maximize your use of time and not waste time on failed pursuits. In this two part series I will identify traditional thinking on the subject and provide advice based on my experience on how to develop your own personal sense of timing and know if you are “moving too fast”.

Give It Time
Personally I have heard the saying of “moving too fast” concerning a employment position or career choice. If I was not pleased with a particular employer or work environment advice would be given to “stick it out” or “give it time”, the idea being that the longer I would stay with things the more pleasant the experience would become. But what is the right amount of time? How long should one stay a given course before moving on? Is there a clear cut formula or does it very from person-to-person or situation-to-situation?
